Now that Windows 7 is available, a recent blog by Chester Wisnieski (who works at security vendor Sophos), entitled Windows 7 vulnerable to 8 out of 10 viruses, which has stirred some interest. Here's a quick summary for those who missed Chester's blog. During a test SophosLabs conducted, they subjected Windows 7 to "10 unique [malware] samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed." They utilized a clean install of Windows 7, using default settings (including the UAC defaults), but did not install any anti-virus software. The end result was 8 of the 10 malware samples successfully ran and the…

Windows 7 sales exceed Vista sales by 234%
5 Nov 2009 | 11:43 amIt has been quite amazing to watch the global excitement build around Windows 7, especially during a tough economic climate. It was just a few short weeks ago that we learned about Windows 7 outselling the UK's "own" Harry Potter. In Japan, anxious PC users waited in line to be one of the first to get their hands on Windows 7. And just today, according to the NPD groups' weekly tracking service, Windows 7 software unit sales in the U.S. increased 234% over Windows Vista's first few days of sales. "A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of… -

Our personalization features give Windows 7 the ability to be as individual and to reflect who you are! Adding to this is a new Personalization Gallery on Windows.com, launched on Oct 22nd. With Windows 7, we’ve made it easy for people to customize their PC with different themes. Rivals call for changes to anti-trust settlement on IE 'ballot screen'
6 Nov 2009 | 3:55 amOpera, Mozilla and other browser developers are calling for Microsoft to tweak its antitrust settlement offer to the European Commission in a bid to restore fair competition to the internet browser market. Their concerns about the settlement are echoed by ECIS, a trade group representing Oracle, IBM, Red Hat and others, as well as by consumer organizations following the Microsoft antitrust case. Microsoft has proposed that Windows operating systems should show users a 'ballot screen' inviting them to choose a web browser from among the most popular ones when they first attempt to… -

How Windows 7's Iconic Home Screen Evolved
6 Nov 2009 | 12:53 amChuck Anderson, creator of Windows 7's laid-back, cerulean-cool default wallpaper and login screen, showed Gizmodo the evolution of his work—including Easter eggs, avoiding Mac tropes and why flaming skulls didn't make the final design. Chuck says the actual design team he worked with was quite small and surprisingly open to his ideas. The first thing they showed him back in December 2008 were those glorious Dr.-Seuss-as-read-by-Hunter-S.-Thompson wallpapers, so it was clear right off the bat that censorship wouldn't really be a problem. The two pieces took about four months,…

October 2009 OS stats: Windows 7 passes Snow Leopard, Linux
Windows 7 arrived two weeks ago and so far it's selling quite sell. With Mac OS X 10.6 becoming available less than three months ago, and Ubuntu 9.10 arriving last week, we feel it's a good time to start watching the market share for operating systems, in addition to our monthly posts on browser market share. At this point in time, Windows continues to dominate with more than 90 percent of the market, Mac OS is above the five percent mark, and Linux is just under one percent. In October, Windows was the only operating system not to show positive growth. View Full Article: Ars Technica -
Seven perfectly legal ways to get Windows 7 cheap (or even free)

Latest Intel drivers add Windows 7 Virtual WiFi support

Microsoft gives away Windows Mobile licensing rights
5 Nov 2009 | 7:01 pmJust when I thought Windows phones had already one too many layers between the end-user and Microsoft, they’ve just decided to add in one more for good measure. Announced today, Microsoft has signed on a third-party, Bsquare, to be the first and currently exclusive distributor for Windows Mobile licenses worldwide. Until just recently, Microsoft has had full control of Windows Mobile licensing to OEMs like HTC who would purchase them to ship with their mobile phones. Instead, it appears Microsoft has relinquished this right entirely to Bsquare, who will on top of just selling licenses,… -

Say hello to the new MSN butterfly
27 Oct 2009 | 7:31 amA trademark application filed earlier this month has quietly revealed a new logo for Microsoft’s online content brand MSN and, presumably, also its many regional subsidiaries. Unfortunately with only a black and white preview to work with, it’s not fair to judge the new logo just yet but its obvious it still retains the now iconic butterfly which was actually not that well received when it debuted in early 2000. And like many recent logo redesigns, this too seems to be all about simplifying the elements with the body of the butterfly removed and wings rounded off to roughly…

Microsoft lifts GPL code, uses in Microsoft Store tool
6 Nov 2009 | 7:53 pmWhile poking through the UDF-related internals of the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, I had a weird feeling there was just wayyyyyyyyy too much code in there for such a simple tool. A simple search of some method names and properties, gleaned from Reflector’s output, revealed the source code was obviously lifted from the CodePlex-hosted (yikes) GPLv2-licensed ImageMaster project. (The author of the code was not contacted by Microsoft.) I see two problems here. (I’m not a FSF professional, so there may be more.) First, Microsoft did not offer or provide source code for their modifications… -

The tool, when directed to use an ISO dumped via ImgBurn, would error out. Everything was to UDF spec, so what was going on here? I’m not a UDF expert, hell not even a novice, but I skimmed through ECMA-167 and the reflected tool code. Tip 41 – How to execute T-SQL directly against the database
7 Nov 2009 | 12:27 amSometimes you’ll find you need to issue a query or command that the Entity Framework can’t support. In fact this problem is common to most ORMs, which is why so many of them have a backdoor to the database. The Entity Framework has a backdoor too… .NET 3.5 SP1 In .NET 3.5 SP1 you can get to the underlying database connection through your ObjectContext. Calling ObjectContext.Connection returns an IDbConnection, but not the one we need, it is an EntityConnection. However the EntityConnection has a StoreConnection property that does return what we need: var entityConn = ctx.Connection as… -

Switchers Guide: Run Windows on a Mac
6 Nov 2009 | 11:20 amThese days, buying a Mac doesn't mean you have to leave Windows behind. In 2005, Apple started building Macs with Intel processors. Among the other benefits of that switch: You can run Microsoft's operating system on Apple's hardware. -
Switchers Guide: Moving hardware and software to Mac
6 Nov 2009 | 11:20 amWhen you're switching from a Windows PC to a Mac, there's one piece of good news: Most of the peripherals you used with your PC--including printers, digital cameras, networking equipment, external drives, and scanners--should work fine with your Mac. The best way to confirm that is to plug each piece of hardware into your new Mac, one at a time; if OS X doesn't automatically identify it and set it up, visit the manufacturer's Web site and look for a downloadable driver. -
Switchers Guide: Move your files from PC to Mac
6 Nov 2009 | 11:19 amIf you've been using a Windows PC but now want to move to a Mac, you likely have files--documents, PDFs, photos, music, and videos--that you want to bring with you. If you've had that PC for a while, that could mean you have many, many gigabytes of stuff to move. These days, most common file-types will work just fine on the Mac, without any need for conversion or special software. (One notable exception: If you have music and/or video in Microsoft's Windows Media formats, get Flip4Mac so you can play them in OS X's QuickTime.) The trick is getting those files from one hard drive to another. -
Switchers Guide: Moving from Windows to the Mac
6 Nov 2009 | 11:19 am[Editors' note: We asked Harry McCracken, the former editor of PC World and the editor of the Technologizer blog, to write a guide to switching to the Mac from Windows. We hope that it's a good resource for anyone--including the friends and family of long-time Mac users--who are making the move from Windows to the Mac. McCracken is himself a semi-switcher--he uses both a MacBook Pro and a Windows netbook every day.] -
Has Microsoft placed its last mobile bet?
6 Nov 2009 | 9:08 amWhen Microsoft first started talking about building mobile-phone software back in the late 1990s, handset makers that had been in the market for years scoffed. Sure, Microsoft was a huge software developer, but making software for mobile devices is different and more complicated than for PCs, they argued. After all, by the late '90s, some companies had already spent decades developing their mobile platforms.

(I’m not a FSF professional, so there may be more.) First, Microsoft did not offer or provide source code for their modifications… -
Jackass alert: Software Candy takes your tips, and spams
5 Nov 2009 | 8:01 pmSoftware Candy, a Vermont-based company, makes its business scouring the web for various invaluable tweaks, throwing an executable wrapper around it, and selling it at enticing prices. If they want to waste their time creating wrappers – fine – but I draw the line at the ripping off my logon UI tip then returning to comment-spam their crap software. What a bunch of losers. Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool with custom ISOs
1 Nov 2009 | 10:42 amWhile Paul Thurrott was playing with the official Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, creating a bootable USB stick for his netbook upgrade, he ran into an interesting snag with certain discs. The tool, when directed to use an ISO dumped via ImgBurn, would error out. Everything was to UDF spec, so what was going on here? I’m not a UDF expert, hell not even a novice, but I skimmed through ECMA-167 and the reflected tool code. It appears there are two (possibly more) “navigation buoys” within UDF-formatted ISOs that point to important chunks of the image called Anchor Volume Descriptor… -

Viewing and Comparing IE Security Zone Settings - enhanced
7 Nov 2009 | 12:26 amI've enhanced the IE security zone comparison utility that I posted here a few weeks ago. Pick an IE security zone (such as Intranet), and the new IEZoneAnalyzer will show what settings are in effect and where those settings come from. -

IT Pro Momentum Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
6 Nov 2009 | 6:18 pmThis is great project involving both Windows Server and Windows 7, take a look at the challenges and solutions below. Objectives of the project: We are still running win XP and 2003 server. The great debate we’ve been having is which to upgrade first or at the same time. Coming from the PC side, I’m pushing to do all the desktops first then move to the servers. But, I can see the wisdom of a server first upgrade, which in all likelihood is the direction we are going. Any issue that we have with either our servers or desktops are problems inherent to XP and 2003 server. Are you…

Building web services on Windows with C++
20 Oct 2009 | 10:19 amWindows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 introduce the new framework for building web services in C++ code. Windows Web Services API (WWSAPI) supports the core set of protocols for SOAP-based web services. Developers can use WWSAPI in applications where they need to use native C/C++ code and they cannot take dependency on .Net Framework. Solutions built with this API require significantly less memory than WCF on the client side. On the server side, the API allows developers to achieve much higher throughput than WCF. You can find links to all online resources available to you to learn more about… -

EU embraces "Internet Freedom"
6 Nov 2009 | 6:07 amThe EU took a big step forward last night and approved a measure to ensure "internet freedom" would remain and that individuals would not have their internet cutoff unjustly. The passage still allows for countries to adopt a three strike policy but "must presume innocence, guard privacy, and allow for judicial appeal". This differs from previous policies that gave EU governments the full… -
Rivals challenge Microsoft browser settlement
6 Nov 2009 | 3:22 amThree rivals of Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser are seeking last minute changes to a proposal, that would see new users of Windows presented with a ballot screen of the top five browsers. In October, the Redmond-based company proposed a so-called browser…

Windows 7 Market Share Climbing Fast
6 Nov 2009 | 7:54 amThis is pretty impressive – Windows 7 hasn’t been out for even 2 weeks yet and already it’s achieved a 3.48% market share as of the end of October according to the tracking firm Net Applications. To put that in perspective, Mac’s OSX has a 5.27% total share. And given the speed at which the percentage is climbing, Windows 7 should pass the install base of OSX sometime in the next two months. According to Vince Vizzaccaro of Net Applications, Vista didn’t climb as fast as this during its early days. He also noted that the company saw surges over the past weekend which was also… -

6 Nov 2009 | 6:21 amOnly suckers pay retail. You don't have to pay full price for Windows 7. Most people have much better options available, if you just know where to look. I've researched deals in three separate categories: upgrade offers available to anyone, special deals just for students, and subscriptions intended for technical professionals and developers. Want to save 58%, 70%, 85%, or even get Windows 7 free? Keep reading. -
What Microsoft won't tell you about Windows 7 licensing
3 Nov 2009 | 6:41 pmIf you're not a lawyer, the subject of Windows licensing can be overwhelmingly confusing. Over many years of studying this stuff, I have learned that Microsoft has buried much of this information in long, dry license agreements and on sites that are available only to partners. Microsoft hasn't assembled this information in one convenient place, so I decided to do the job myself, gathering details from public and private sources. -

Microsoft's Courier Could Match An Apple Tablet PC
6 Nov 2009 | 1:57 pmApple has been earning a lot of press lately about the oft-rumored Tablet PC--I did my own scuttlebutt round-up about it earlier this week, complete with an analyst stating that Apple's partners make it harder and harder to keep secrets. They're not alone in either the tablet PC or scurrilous-rumors category, though: Gizmodo has been drilling deep into the Courier, a tablet/booklet that will supposedly run on Windows 7, with Microsoft-crafted hardware, and let you take notes and run applications. On Nov. 4, the blog hit the proverbial motherlode, publishing several slides and a short video of… -
Microsoft Revises MSN Home Page, Embracing Simplicity
4 Nov 2009 | 2:27 pmLooks like Microsoft finally got some of that old-time simplicity religion: Today, the news hit that Microsoft would be rolling out a stripped-down and personalized version of its MSN homepage. This was no small feat; from the moment that the first version of the site rolled out a decade ago, MSN.com and Yahoo seemed in neck-and-neck competition to see which could clog its landing page with the most hyperlinks. Let's take a trip in the DeLorean time machine back to 1999, when the MSN homepage looked like this (image courtesy of Microsoft's MSN Blog): The site underwent some fairly radical… -
Microsoft Executive Apologizes for Windows 7 'Hack' Comment. Sorta.
3 Nov 2009 | 2:12 pmNow you've gone and made Eric Ligman upset.Ligman is the global partner experience lead for Microsoft Worldwide Partner Group, and the one who wrote an Oct. 27 posting on the Microsoft SMB Community Blog about people using Windows 7 upgrade discs to install the entire operating system on a blank hard drive.Such a move, Ligman impressed upon his audience at the time, was illegal. "When these posts and write-ups state that you can install clean from an Upgrade piece of software and they fail to mention that you need to own a qualifying software license to be legal to use the Upgrade software… -
Microsoft vs. Google: Clash of the Online Advertising Titans
2 Nov 2009 | 2:02 pmIn its bid to further challenge Google on the online advertising front, Microsoft Nov. 2 announced a deal with OpenX Technologies (an "independent ad server for Web publishers," according to Microsoft's news release) that will have the two companies referring publishers to one another, as well as cross-marketing. The companies claim that OpenX's base of 150,000 Websites delivers 300 billion ads per month. As part of the partnership, OpenX will use that channel to promote Microsoft's Content Ads, which Redmond no doubt hopes will be a Google AdSense killer. The agreement reveals more fully… -
Microsoft Opens Store in Same Mall As Apple
29 Oct 2009 | 3:04 pmMicrosoft opened its second retail location, this one in Mission Viejo, Calif., on Oct. 29. Microsoft executives have stated that they intend to compete aggressively against Apple in the retail arena, with plans to open some Microsoft outlets in close proximity to those of its hip Cupertino rival. The Shops at Mission Viejo will be the first true test of that theory, as the mall also contains an Apple Store. (According to the local Orange County Register, the Apple Store in question is "closed for renovations and will not reopen until November." I doubt that. They're probably building a…

Active Directory Fundamentals
6 Nov 2009 | 2:17 pmSince the inception of network operating systems, the men and women who are responsible for administering and managing them have wanted an easy way to do so. Networks have gone through a natural evolution from peer-to-peer networks to directory-based networks. Directory-based networks have become the preferred type of network because they can ease an administrator’s workload. To address the needs of organizations, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) developed a set of recommendations that defined how a directory service should address the needs of administrators and… -

The plugins are provided by Adobe and Sun, respectively, and here we show you how to get these plug-ins working in a breeze.Installing plug-ins automaticallyWhen you open a page that requires a plug-in, such as Flash Player, a yellow bar slides in below the toolbar indicating that an additional plug-in is required. Windows 7 Ten Things That Still Need Fixing
2 Nov 2009 | 4:50 pmFlawless? Windows 7? Of course not. Think of these ten areas as constituting a working to-do list for Windows 8.1. OVERALL CONSISTENCY: For a Microsoft product, Windows 7 is quite refined. But it still suffers from needless inconsistency. Why do most of its tools place menus on the left, while Internet Explorer 8 and the help system shove them over to the opposite end? Does the new media-sharing feature (HomeGroup) have zero, one, or two capital letters? Why does Office 2007’s Ribbon interface show up only in Paint and WordPad?2. Users of the Redmond company’s older releases of the instant messaging client have been forced to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger 9.0 (2009) 14.0.8089.726, as Microsoft is offering absolutely no alternative in this regard. And with the frequency that the UAC displays prompts, most users find it a nuisance rather than a useful security alert feature. Moreover, when the user ends up with too many UAC prompts, it actually defeats the purpose, as users…
